A Sealed Cockpit

A Sealed Cockpit
Rachel trapped inside
The Triton falls into the sea after its winch cable is cut. The impact damages the hatch, and the sub begins sinking as bullet holes allow water into its ballast tanks.
Rachel tries to open the portal but finds it bent and jammed. With power failing, she is alone inside a darkening cockpit.
A narrowing margin
The sub’s acrylic dome leaks, carbon dioxide builds, and water rises across the floor. Rachel’s childhood fear of drowning returns with full force.
Her physical isolation mirrors the emotional isolation created by her father’s betrayal and Pickering’s revelation.
Tolland Reaches the Dome

Tolland Reaches the Dome
A rescue attempt
Tolland dives to the sinking Triton and tries to turn the hatch from outside. He discovers that the hatch dogs are bent and cannot be opened by force.
He remains with Rachel despite his own need to breathe, unwilling to repeat the helplessness he experienced when Celia died.
A dangerous alternative
Tolland realizes that the damaged window seal might give way if pressure inside the cabin rises. He reroutes compressed air into the cockpit, hoping to force the dome loose before the pressure harms Rachel.
The plan is an act of desperation built from his technical knowledge and refusal to abandon her.
Pressure and Recognition

Pressure and Recognition
A painful signal
Compressed air fills the cabin, causing Rachel severe pain and threatening to overwhelm her. Through the darkness, she sees Tolland outside the glass trying to communicate.
He signals for her to push on the dome. At first she cannot understand his intent, and the pressure makes every movement difficult.
Rachel acts
When she falls against the acrylic and feels air escape, she realizes that Tolland is trying to blow the window outward. She turns the pressure and the loose seal into an opportunity rather than waiting passively for rescue.
Her survival depends on interpreting another person’s actions under conditions designed to make thought nearly impossible.
The Dome Opens

The Dome Opens
A final effort
Rachel climbs onto the chair and drives both feet into the acrylic dome. The damaged seal shifts, and the pressure equalizes violently as the window swings partly open.
Water floods the cockpit, but the opening gives Rachel a route out before the sub can carry her to the bottom.
No clear direction
Rachel escapes into unlit water and immediately loses her sense of orientation. She cannot identify which way leads to the surface.
The mechanical barrier is gone, but survival now depends on her ability to act through panic and accept Tolland’s guidance.
The Vortex and Rescue

The Vortex and Rescue
The ocean turns violent
The Hellfire missiles detonate against a magma dome on the ocean floor, triggering an eruption. The megaplume intensifies into a surface vortex that threatens to pull the swimmers and nearby ship downward.
Tolland finds Rachel in the dark water and directs her away from the apparent light that is actually part of the dangerous flow.
Lifted to safety
A Coast Guard Osprey arrives after reports of an explosion and rescues Rachel, Corky, and finally Tolland. Their escape depends on timing, the rescue crew’s intervention, and the choices they make in the water.
The eruption destroys the Goya and kills Pickering, but the surviving witnesses reach the shore with the truth intact.
